Prisoner's Dilemma
Ever heard of it? Two criminals are caught together. They are put in separate interrogation rooms. Each is told that they can either keep quiet or rat out their partner; if both keep quiet, they'll get a mild 5 year sentence. If both rat each other out, they'll each get 10 years. Here's the kicker: if one stays silent and protects his partner, but the other turns and betrays the loyal one, the snitch walks away free and the one who kept quiet gets a life sentence. Write a prisoner's dilemma story- is there a way for everyone to walk away free? Poetry, prose, fiction, nonfiction, all good.

Interrogator

"So the deal is if one talks they walk, the one who stays quiet gets life. Or the other options are both zip it and get five years or both rat and get ten." I stare at the detective sitting in front of me and he nods. I smile, "I can work with this, okay if you really want to break her you have to go for the weak spots." He raised an eyebrow but listened, even though I am significantly younger I am the pro here. "You've probably seen in her file about her mother. That abandonment issue will definitely get you a reaction so bring up how everyone she's ever met has let her down. It's brutal but it should plant the seed needed to crack her." "Seems a little cruel to me?" I shake my head "Maybe but in the end it is a kindness, so go on break her to save her." He leaves and I hope my plan works I know she was just brought along for the ride by her partner, she doesn't deserve prison. Hours later the detective returns to see me his expression both sad and relieved. I smile even though a part of me wants to cry. "She confessed didn't she" He gives a nod and I place my face into my shackled hands and weep.
