To The One That Got Away

I read the words at the top of the page, my mind reeling.

What?

Who is this? I continued reading.

The minute the battle broke out, you ran. Many thought you were scared but we, the ones in command, knew better than to think that. You dodged bullets and ran for cover. You aren't a coward, you are the one that got away.

I stopped reading there. A quick flashback blinded me and then it was gone, never to be remembered.

I shut my eyes, my mind seemed to be boxing with its-self.

I froze, memories flooding back.

The battle, why had I been in the battle? I was only fifteen to date!

You were in the battle to save your race, to save those that knew about you that would die if you didn't. You put your life at risk to save them, and here you are, the one that got away. Why didn't it save them after all you had done?

My thoughts again came back clear and understandable.

They died to save you.

I looked at the signature.
