Greater Good/Lesser Evil
... your interpretation of Greater Good/Lesser Evil... poetry or prose.
The means justify the end
Do the means justify the end?
If by doing the lesser evil
Will I lose all of my friends?
But for the greater good!
Ah, yes.
But when the bullet pierces his flesh
Will the death of my enemy be mourned
Any less?
Who weighs the two and determines
Whose worth is greater
For my good is another’s evil
And my evil another’s good
And can I judge better
Than any other would?
So I have a choice to make
A gun in my hand
A great deal is at stake
My friend
Or a murderer
My friend
Or the man I hate
So I made the one choice
That wouldn’t damn me to hell
The lesser evil for my greater good
I wish them both well

LadyRB at gunpoint! a rough decision trying to take "justice into one's own hands."Live and let live a difficult philosophy to adhere to... we are so quick to judge and condemn. Alexander Pope's Essay on Man comes to mind on casting judgement, which as he contends belongs to God, and is usurped by the arrogance of Humans: <center><font face="Times New Roman" size=3> <i>Snatch from his hand the balance and the rod, <br>
Re-judge his justice, be the GOD of GOD! <br>
In Pride, in reas'ning Pride, our error lies; <br>
All quit their sphere, and rush into the skies. <br>
Pride still is aiming at the blest abodes, <br>
Men would be Angels, Angels would be Gods. <br>
Aspiring to be Gods, if Angels fell, <br>
Aspiring to be Angels, Men rebel; <br>
And who but wishes to invert the laws <br>
Of ORDER, sins against th' Eternal Cause."</i><br></font></center>
I particularly return to your line "And can I judge better Than another would?" A call for Humility. Many thanks for this!! I appreciate your entering my challenge :)M
