Pretty soon though, the guy starts to realize how shallow his girlfriend is and that he really loves his friend- the girl

It has got to be the song "Mean". It's about how even if your life is bad now, and people are mean to you, later in life YOU are the one that's gonna have the good, rich high life and you are going to love yourself and be confident, and those people that were mean to you... You're just gonna remember them as "Mean". And those mean people are going to be the ones that are watching you on television and seeing you in the magazines.
