First Day of School
Nia had been in the village for two whole days. She walked around with her mother as her mother went to the store for groceries and looked around. The village wasn’t very big at all. They didn’t need to ride a carraige to get anywhere and in fact it struck Nia as strange that there were no horses anywhere.
Everyone walked everywhere. People greeted each other and everybody seemed to know everybody else. People she didn’t even know even seemed to know who she was. The reason for this was that the whole village had been informed that a new family was moving in so they were all expecting it.
Everybody was very nice to Nia and made her feel less nervous. The fact was that she was nervous because she was about to start school. Nia’s mother walked her to the school and made sure she got to her class. Her teacher was very nice. There were 10 students in her class including the little girl she met the morning she woke up after arriving.
Since she didn’t know anyone else, that first day she clung to her only aquaintance and they became friends. All the children made her feel welcomed and by the end of the day she felt a lot better about everything. When school let out her mother was waiting for her and they walked home together. As they were walking, a group of teenagers passed by them. Nia and her mother stopped to let them pass. One boy eyed Nia and stared at her the entire time they were passing but Nia’s mother didn’t notice it. The boy was holding a cube that had tiny holes in it. It sent shivers down her spine and she didn’t know what to think about it.
That evening Nia and her parents all ate the evening meal together. It was their custom at the evening meal to talk about the things that happened to them during the day. Nia’s father was settling into his new job. He said he liked the slower pace here in the country and that his co-workers were making his transition pleasant. Nia’s mother said that she was more familiar with getting around the village and everyone was helpful. There was a women’s group that met once a week that she joined to get to know everyone better.
Nia said that she saw her friend at school. She also told her parents about the creepy teen that stared at her that had the cube as she walked home with her mother. Her mother commented that she didn’t notice anyone like that and if there had been, he would have stuck out because everyone had been so nice. Nia promised that she wasn’t making it up and her mother told her the next time she saw this boy to point him out to her.
Nia had trouble sleeping. She had never seen the boy before but something inside her that she couldn’t identify told her that wasn’t the case with him. She had no idea though how he could possibly have seen her before since she just arrived.
