1. Apples
2. Oranges
3. Protesters
4. Rioters/Looters
There is a fruit bowl on my counter where apples and oranges sit in a fruit bowl. Besides being fruit and in the same bowl, that is where their similarities end.
There is a protest downtown where attendees legally, peacefully express their first amendment rights. At that same protest, rioters and looters arrive breaking the law. Besides both groups being people and on the same street that is where their similarities end.
Protestor, noun: A person who publicly legally demonstrates strong objection to something
Rioter, noun: A violently public disorderly unlawful person
I Killed My Love
I killed my love today, with words
Rashly cast and keenly scored;
Rage succeeded self-control,
Spitting barbs of vitriol
And whetted edge its mark re-found,
Remembering a former wound
Though pen triumphs the biting sword,
Sharper still’s the daggered word;
And fury of the tongue could be
Murder of a first degree.
murmurs and screams
words are air,
manipulated wisps
of oxygen
that wreak havoc
on ear drums.
words are ink,
smeared precisely,
exact and vague
all at once.
words are swords,
double edged
and sharpened
to the point
that just the
suggestion
of contact
draws blood.
words are change.
persuasion,
a distortion
of the universe,
of all the opinions
that holds it
together.
words are the soul,
emerging from lips,
slipping out through
cracks in the mind.
words are a reflection.
a disturbance.
a trigger.
everything.
sticks and stones
broken bones
are warm hugs
in comparison to
a splintered spirit
wrathful words
do far greater
damage than one
might suspect

Indelible
Whoever said
“Sticks and stones
may break my bones,
but words will never hurt me”
did not know the power of
a well-timed verbal barb.
Many a sting I’ve endured
from sharp sticks and rocks alike.
But never did the pain
pierce so deep
or linger so long
as a vitriolic word.
What is not commonly known
about the nature of the spoken word
is that words hold a tangible substance,
solid as any physical thorn.
Once released into the atmosphere,
words may impart a gift of hurt
in a single cutting remark,
unable to be retracted,
lasting as a wounded heart.
If only we all took some time
to consider the indelible mark
left behind by the words we speak.
Maybe we would wait a moment
before expressing our thoughts,
or simply let a few nasty syllables
fall unspoken by the wayside.
sunset
take down the sunset a layer after another
until you reach a plain white sky
and i’ll tell you a story before i leave
while i sit in the middle of the asphalt road
hoping the next car won’t brake in time
i’ll tell you why everything has changed
take down the orange dripping out
like sunlit honey spilled from a glass jar
fireplace made of stone glowing warmth
wooden cabin floors in autumn leaves
the same color as her nail polish
and the last thing i saw before
she grasped my throat and held down
acrylic nails ripping me inside out
string lights wrapped around my neck
her eyes piercing what was left of me
take down the red burning the sky to dust
an illusion of fireworks exploding in the air
soft like rose petals fallen to the ground
tasted of ripe raspberries and velvet wine
like scratches hidden under my clothes
from fractured tips of her sharp nails
fresh blood seeping out from her touch
maroon fingerprints across pale skin
old scars and new cuts merged into one
colored by the edge of a stained blade
take down the pink blush snuggled in
sweet pastel swirls of a cotton candy
like cherry blossoms falling on the grass
juices dripping from soft fuzzy peaches
sticky lipstick stains she left on my body
tasted like copper and rust and bubblegum
the flavors on my tongue she has ruined
and memories i could never wash away
her drunken teeth against my paper skin
until my body wasn’t mine anymore
take down the last purple in the barren sky
neon lights and a pitcher of lavender paint
lilac wings of a butterfly caught in sunlight
pastel constellations that once held dreams
i think purple was her favorite color
and that was why she had to cover me
with bruises across my broken body
and you’ll find my lips in that ghastly tone
when i drown myself in a bathtub hearing
my favorite songs fade out one last time
take down the sunset a layer after another
until you reach a plain white sky
she gave me a million reasons to leave
when she was the one that made me stay
and now i think you know why
why i flinch at the sight of every color

Charades
There is a saying that actions speak louder than words, but
if we did not have words, we would not have such a saying.
If we did not have words, we couldn’t communicate.
Have you every very played charades? Acting everything out without words...
or Pictionary... drawing everything without using words...
words have power far greater than actions. They express, the preserve, they inspire.
quattuor verba,
Don't talk to me.
Four words, lying wait in the inbox for me to find, sending me away, to the depth of the space underneath my bed.
Four words, stuck in my head, making me wonder endlessly about what my heart holds.
Four words that might be making me into a better person.
Just the 80’s
I just called to say I loooove youuu.
I sang. I was too young to understand. The lyrics had little meaning to me. Just a series of negative statements regarding occasions that Stevie expected to call his cherie amour, only that none of them was current.
The word ‘Just’ has this diminutive effect. It just lessens the message. Makes it less dramatic.
But why add just? Why Stevie, why?
Why not say "i called to say I love you"?
I can't believe a genius like Stevie wonder would fail to notice this, or fit this just for meter's sake. The guy is a perfectionist, I hear. God bless him.
So why 'just'?
Was the just a way to diminish the moment of your call, or the message you were convaying?
In any case, years passed, and I was looking for stuff to add to the playlist , which I turn on during play time with my baby.
It was joy to hear it, and see my little one dance .
The new school year is going to start, and for the first time in almost 9 months, I will be away from her. I am already going crazy...
Now i came to conclude that the use of ‘just’ is neither of the options i stated before. It is not a way to diminish the occasion, nor the message.
It is a way to dimminish and even imply apology for the way of delivering the message.
I just called.... Would be Stevie’s regret that he is unable to cross some distance and to exclaim, in person , his great love.
What a terrible feeling it is, to feel a need to say something so deep, only to be unable to do it!
Perhaps the negative statements in the verse are regrets of occasions missed.
That would be an intimate thing, known only to two people, and yet felt and lived by so many .
It’s just the power of words..
