Had I kown then what I know now, I would have never made the first step..
The voice dripped down into my ears...
"Really? You can't do it? ..
Come on child, give it a try.
I promise to be with you,..
Except the last step..."
The door to the attic slammed as I entered imprisoning me; shadows danced while I froze knowing I was not alone.
The words sounded genuine, but the tone was wrong, twisted and gnarled in a devious way, it drove a shiver down my spine; I turned slowly, so so slowly to face the breath flowing down the back of my neck.
"Please, child, you must help me. Please save me from my fate," the voice pleaded.
I tried to gather my thoughts and go to my mental happy place; and I hoped like never before that I would not need my inhaler, which I had left on my bed downstairs.
I heard its tranquil, yet raspy voice reach out for me in the utter silence.
A thud resonated through the attic; it echoed, and seemed to shake the entire house
Facing now the way I'd come, drenched in the cold sweat of fear, I stared into the blackness that enveloped me, sensing still that someone...something watched...waited...as did I....and then a warm breath again touched the back of my neck...
