On This Day: October 2nd … Strange Holidays

Day After the Mid-Autumn Festival

International Day of Non-Violence

Mid-Autumn Day Festival 3

Day after Mid-Autumn Day Festival

National Day Golden Week Holiday

Independence Day Holiday

National Produce Misting Day

National Custodial Worker’s Recognition Day

National Name Your Car Day

National Fried Scallops Day

National Manufacturing Day

National Body Language Day

Phileas Fogg Wager Day

World Smile Day

*****

The only two holidays that would involve

The United States are World Smile Day

and International Day of Non-Violence.

But National Name Your Car Day, somehow

became our day.

*****

I looked these three up:

Phileas Fogg Wager Day:

The holiday celebrates key events in Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in Eighty Days. In the book, Phileas Fogg, the main character of the 1873 novel makes a wager of 20,000 pounds to circumnavigate the Earth in 80 days on October 2, 1872. This unofficial holiday celebrates the wager that set out one of the world's most famous adventure in motion.

National Produce Misting Day:

National Produce Misting Day on October 2nd recognizes

the innovation of keeping fruits and vegetables fresh. Misted fingertips

rest assured that produce remains crisp, plump, hydrated and nutrient-dense.

Given a choice between fresh and tired produce, we choose fresh every time.

Corrigan Corporation of America founded National Produce Misting Day in 2018 to share the fascinating history behind the inventive engineering that brings fresh produce to our local stores. They honor and celebrate Jack Corrigan, who is credited with establishing the first patents for automatic produce misting systems back in 1979 and his son Mike Corrigan, for having the vision to bring it to market.

As the owner of the Carrot Top produce market, Jack Corrigan

also had a civil engineering background. Out of necessity, he combined

his two interests and set to work. Corrigan’s inventions led to the development of innovative tools and a market-leading manufacturing company.

The Registrar at National Day Calendar proclaimed the first National Produce Misting Day in 2019 to be observed on October 2nd annually.

National Name Your Car Day:

National Name Your Car Day on October 2nd encourages a special

commitment to your wheels. It’s time to give your trusty

automobile what it really needs, a name.

Many of you most likely remember Herbie the Love Bug, Lightning McQueen from Cars, Kit from Knight Rider, General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard and Bandit from Smokey and the Bandit. These are just some of the famous car names

that are known by millions of people.

Make a day of it. Take the old jalopy out for a spin, a nice wash, and

shine and then just maybe you will select a signature meant for one s

o reliable. After all, you spend all that time together and take such

good care of each other, isn’t it time to give those four wheels a name?

More Strange Holidays tomorrow!

There Is a Place

Not crowded, nearly desolate,

there is a place where big dog’s roam,

pick-up trucks sit around,

where young and old, stop and go,

and good ole’ boys chew the fat.

Old houses sit in silence,

sagging from age and emptiness.

Railroad tracks busted and rusted,

And an old barn turned movie theater,

long since taken down,

nothing more than a shallow memory,

where overgrown weeds and bush grass,

have taken root for time eternal.

But the store is still there.

In another lifetime,

business boomed.

Gas pumps stood tall at five cents a gallon.

soda pop was a nickel,

and Grandma lit up the place,

as Granddaddy made sure everyone got a fair shake.

The building structure in white,

was the happening place.

Whatever you needed,

just ask.

But one thing about this place

money could never buy;

the conversation,

the sense of simply being.

Today, the building,

housed in flaked paint, rotted boards,

no gas pumps,

and business, sparse;

stands in the middle of the past.

Yet, like all years past,

it holds a place in unknown history.

where pick-up trucks stop,

good ole’ boys chew the fat,

and you feel you still belong.

*****

(The piece is based on the photo above

though closed, the store still stands)

The Other Holiday You Don’t Hear About

This is going to be an ongoing thing between now and September 30, 2021.

Nothing fancy, no poetry, no stories told, nothing expletive. Just as Jack Webb would say on Dragnet, “Just the facts.”

Each day, you will see a listed holiday. Some strange, some wird, some funny. All different though from the holidays we are most usd to.

So, lt us begin.

October 1st

World Vegetarian Day

International Coffee Day

Children’s Day

Cyprus Intgernational Day

Chuuk Constitution Day

National Day of the People’s Republic of China

Mid-Autumn Festival Day 2

Armed Forces Day

Independence Day

National Day

Mid-Autumn Festival

Elder’s Day

Teachers Day

Independence of Southern British Cameroons from UK

Investiture Ceremony of the Captains Regent 2

German Food Bank Day

Black History Month

National Hair Day

Fire Pup Day

National Homemade Cookies Day

Balloons Around the World Day

********

Now, I Googled three of these:

Fire Pup Day:

National Fire Pup Day on October 1st recognizes the canine firefighters that have long been members of fire departments across the country. While the Dalmation’s origin is unknown, their use in firehouses began during the 1700′s.

National Hair Day

There’s a day to express your love for your hair — National Hair Day on October 1. NuMe, a hair products company,  created this day for people to celebrate hair styling tools and other hair products.

Since ancient times women have been obsessed with their hair. Cleopatra washed hers with donkey’s milk! Today, for many women, hair is high maintenance because how you wear your hair makes a statement about you.  So, color your hair purple with polka dots, braid it,  throw a weave in it or just wear your hair short and flirty.  Today is a day to celebrate your personality as personified by your hair and to explore ways to keep it lustrous and healthy.

International Coffee Day

International Coffee Day is an unofficial holiday with a dual purpose: to celebrate one of the most popular beverages in the world and to raise awareness about sustainable coffee cultivation, as well as fair trade practices in the coffee industry. While some countries have their own holidays to celebrate this amazing beverage, this holiday is observed by most everyone on October 1st.

And for the record, not one of these is a celebration known for in the United States, sucj as Armed Forces Day which is held in South Korea, and Black History Month which is recognized in the United Kingdom.

The only three on this day that would be recognized by the United States are World Vegetarian Day, International Coffee Day, and Internation Day of Older Persons.

I’m Not Insane But They Won’t Let Me Free

Surrounded by white, velvet cushioned walls,

overlaid by speckled ceiling,

pale floor, cold white as iced snow;

looking beyond meshed-screened windows,

seeing others free to roam this city of pain,

wondering what they think, what they feel.

Wondering why they choose to be out there,

instead of here, where people like me are safe.

Safe to think thoughts without harassments.

Safe to utter ideas without ridicule.

The other day I wrote a book of intervals;

should be on the Best Seller’s list forever.

It’s a story about the morning dew,

and the morning don’ts.

About the leaves on a tree,

of others who leaves us behind.

Cars weaving in and out of traffic,

and dealers who traffic their drugs.

Then came the wimps, losers, and cry-baby’s,

and I wrote about the abandoned baby who cried.

How easy it is for man and woman to get a piece,

how hard it is to achieve world peace.

I had to stop;

my staff of white-sheeted workers

stopped by to make sure I stay healthy.

I have to take my medication,

so I don’t become ill.

Once I have, they are happy with me,

and no one has ill-feelings.

I like them when they are happy with me;

maybe I will give them a raise.

Getting back to my book,

the ending is really there.

One day I wake up and find out,

I was never really here.

Have You Ever Experienced A Moment Like This

Into My Life

you came.

We became good friends,

shared daily stories

about our daily lives.

I saw you as someone special,

someone I could love.

You looked at me simply as a friend.

I watched, listened,

of the sorrows of your life.

With each new relationship you had,

you knew you could trust me,

because we were friends.

All you wanted was “to be loved,”

words you would say after each hurt.

“Perhaps the next time will be the best of times,”

I would say, privately wishing it would be me.

Then you saw your last sun rise,

breathed your final breath.

Love never touched you,

the way you dreamed it would.

Into my life you came,

a one-sided love affair,

and you never knew.
