Love in Winter, revisited

The challenge I posted today based on a Dr. Seuss quote that begins "How did it get so late so soon" brought to mind a piece I wrote some time ago, Love in Winter. Upon rereading it, I had to laugh. How innocent I was, we were, to think we were suffering, stiff upper lip, smiling in the face of adversity, living passionately whilst awaiting progressive physical decline. How absurd to think we found those days challenging. They were wonderful moments indeed when you wrapped yourself around me at night, while now just getting into bed is a chore. We were wearing blinders, you and I. We were still in the summer of our lives. We just thought things so bad we must indeed have reached the winter of our days. But now I realize, the fall has barely begun.

How frightening to discover life has so much worse to offer.
