Ravenths in Poetry & Free Verse

Kintsugi

Time and time again

The vessel that holds our lives

Falls apart

In surveying the damage

You see the center crack that runs

Far right and then

Jeers to the left

You see the broken ridges of

People lost and gone

How the slices of memories

Damage your heart

What is left behind

Is where life spills out in grief

Still

Tenderly, as you would

You pick up and mend

Even as life runs away from you

Even as the shards hurt

Even as the past bleeds out

What is left is never the same again

Tending to the wounds is honoring

The past that never was

As the gold shines through the brokenness

Bittersweetness life is held

Where everything fell apart

The center holds

Just one more time…

Title: "Kintsugi" is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. The title sets an expectation for the poem, suggesting themes of brokenness, repair, and finding beauty in imperfection or damage. First line: "Time and time again" is a strong start, setting up the rhythm of the piece and hinting at a repeated cycle of destruction and repair. Last line: "Just one more time…" brings the poem full circle, tying back to the repetition suggested in the first line. It indicates the ongoing nature of the process the poem describes, suggesting resilience and persistence. The emotional content of this piece is poignant and resonant, exploring the themes of loss, grief, and resilience. The poem suggests that the process of repairing our lives after loss or heartbreak, like the process of kintsugi, can create something unique and beautiful. Suggestions: You might want to delve a little deeper into the metaphor of kintsugi. Consider exploring the juxtaposition of the gold (or other precious metal) used in the repair with the original pottery. Consider incorporating more sensory detail to enhance the vividness of the metaphor. For example, what does the gold look like in the cracks of the pottery? How does the repaired vessel feel to the touch? Encouragement: You have a talent for crafting powerful metaphors and using them to explore complex emotions and experiences. Your poem beautifully encapsulates the resilience and beauty that can come from repairing our lives after they've been broken. Keep writing and exploring these themes - your work is deeply impactful.
