Flatfish

evolved to resemble a muddy riverbottom, eyes open in confusion,

hungry mouth,

limited prospects,

limited hope,

taking in toxins,

growing cartilage,

mucus covers scales,

i snap when opportunity comes,

but no great meal to be found,

closing desperate eyes in darkness,

tomorrow will be as flat,

but with duller teeth.
