wink

stars stare

down at you,

clamoring, burning

for your attention,

your admiration,

your praise.

we stare back,

watching and wondering

how they hold their shining eyes open

for all eternity.

but when we look away,

that's when the stars blink,,

finally breaking their facade

of unblinking watchfulness.

they stare and

we take their sight as caring.

so they keep staring

telling us they care

but even stars need to blink sometimes.

and they blink when we look away,

finally able to pause their empathy

and replace it

with apathy

just for a moment.
