Challenge

Ask An Atheist Day Round Two
Hello everybody. Today is national Ask an Atheist Day. After last years successful turn out, I've decided to create the "Ask an Atheist" challenge. This is a chance to get to know us atheists and have an understanding from one another. Anyone is free to ask questions regarding faith and our lack of faith. Fellow atheists here on Prose are free to help answer questions and enter if they choose to. As a reminder, this is a friendly challenge, so let's be respectful to one another. Let's get started. I'm an atheist. Ask me anything.
Semantics
If there was no such thing as religion, would there still be people who called themselves atheists? ^_^

Ironically, if there was no such thing as religion, I would call it heaven. XD

LandCreature
I'm sure they would find another term for "contrarian" lol

zanlexus
Yeah, I see where you're coming from there, @Harry_Situation. I remember a lot of guilt all that time growing up in a catholic household. But I can also see how religion could be a source of comfort. So I can see both sides. :)

zanlexus
@MsWrites. LOL, yeah atheist is one of those things that defines itself by what it's not. Not saying that's a bad thing. There are all sorts of identities like that. We do it in Canada all the time. We define ourselves by how we're NOT American. It's interesting to think about. ^_^

ValiantRaptor47
Hm, interesting. I suppose people would just be people, then. (:

zanlexus
@ValiantRaptor47. Yep. No more devision because of religion. We'd find something else to be divided over. :)

BonnieBoo
Good question

zanlexus
Thanks, @BonnieBoo. ^_^

The word Religion literally means " to tie back to God", It does not mean " belief in God", so yes, there would still be atheists and there would still be believers in God.
I personally do not understand how anyone could have any other good explanation for the origin of the universe or for life, without a God.

zanlexus
@arctic. Well, that's definitely semantics. Good point. :) Personally, I'm an agnostic, but what I don't understand about the belief in god/s, is that they are the most perfect beings you can possibly think of, and somehow that is an explanation for the existence of the imperfect physical world. To me, that doesn't make sense. If it is improbable that existence came out of nothing, isn't it even more improbable that these perfect beings came out of nothing to create it? I'm not trying to discount religion, this is just my perspective. ^_^

I understand your point, sounds like you are trying to say " where would God come from?"
Well, since you seem to like deep concepts I will tell you my view. Bear with me to the end.
Time is relevant to mass, that is what scientists are starting to theorize.
Time itself must have mass to "play with" or it can not exist. Time is the concept that makes events happen before and after other events. However since this is true time can not exist without any events. IF nothing happens then there is no " what time did it happen" there is no
" when did it happen, relative to when other things happened". So time can not exist if nothing occurs, and nothing can occur without mass. Thus time is dependent on mass. This being said, any being who is all-powerful and created the laws of the universe itself and is beyond mass is not bound by time. If God is really God he is not bound by mass and thus not bound by time.
So he does not have to have a beginning in time, he created the beginning of time and has existed before it. I believe he is also personal though, so he gave us free will to chose if we wish to believe in him or not, and if we chose to do what is right or wrong. That is why the earth is what it is. He is loving, and a loving person would never force other beings to love him or fallow him. That is my view, I am not forcing anything on you.
