our shoulders brush

on the way out the door,

and my lips form your name-

but I am too damn shy to say it.

and I can hardly breathe around you

let alone talk

but at least I'm trying.

Trying, as I meet your eyes

(good morning)

and pick up your pencil when it clatters to the floor.

(are you all right?)

Still trying, as we smile at one another for the last time.
