Challenge of the Week CXXXVII
Shame, shame, shame. Shame may be the glue that holds society together; or it may be the bane of authenticity and happiness. Maybe it's both. Write about shame. Fiction or non-fiction, poetry or Prose.

The First Encounter

Greetings, child.

I don’t believe we’ve met.

I’ve met all those on this street before, but I suppose, not you.

My name is Shame.

No, dear, not Shane.

Yes, dear, you heard me right the first time.

I am indeed very sorry that we are only just meeting.

But what a pleasure it is indeed.

I thank you for opening your home to us, even if it is only for a little while.

So, I suppose, a grand greeting is in order.

May I introduce you to my friends, like brothers they are to me.

Him over there, in the corner, you see? He’s my pal, Depression. Hey, by the way, do you see the soaking carpet beneath him? No, no, the ceiling isn’t leaking, if you look close enough - follow my finger child, just above his sullen head, yes right there, you see? There’s a dreary little cloud, kind of like a pet. Feel free to go and see, but careful not to go too near. You may get rather wet.

And the little fellow over here, the one bouncing on your furniture, he too is a friend of mine, his name is Anxiety. Quite an odd chap indeed. You would do well to keep some distance, he has this strange habit of offering hugs that simply crush your chest, my dear. But indeed he may be useful at times, he will always keep you grounded, whenever you ask for his advice.

But, dear, fear not. We won’t be here to stay.

We’ll just be here to keep you company, until you feel okay.
