Brooke17 in Poetry & Free Verse

I don’t understand

My greatest fear

Is of stares.

Not of people looking at me,

But of stares.

Stares that mean

I did something strange

Something weird

Stares that mean

I forgot myself,

Forgot to be normal

And did something

They don't understand

Stares that mean I'm different

That I don't see

The world

The way others do

That I'm not

Understanding

Something

Everyone else gets.

I just want

To crawl away

To hide

To erase what I said

Or did

That made people give me

Such blank, confused stares

So that I can be normal.

There's nothing scarier than knowing you're different.
