An Introduction of Myself

My name is H.B. and I’m an addiction & mental health advocate & writer from the Pittsburgh, PA.

My passion for writing came to life in October of 2018 once I discovered my voice and a few good stories to accompany it. From there, I began a daily writing habit and took the best advice an experienced writer could offer a newbie like myself. That advice was ‘write what you know’ and that’s just what I did.

Moving forward, I enrolled in a freelance writing course online to cultivate the skills and knowledge needed to advance in the freelance world. Since then, I’ve joined Facebook groups and created other social media accounts, such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Wordpress for the opportunity to engage with other freelancer writers.

As a writer, I’m also an avid reader with an interest in learning and researching my topics of choice. My favorite genre is creative nonfiction. I enjoy reading true life stories when I’m not writing my and applying it to some aspect of my life.

When I’m not engaged in writing my book, I write about my past struggles with concurrent substance abuse disorder. The term concurrent is used to refer to co-occurring addiction and mental health disorder. These conditions are oftentimes called dual disorders and co-occur in a variety of ways. They can be active at the same time or one after another — either in the past or present. They are best identified as independent problems that interact with one another and may worsen the course of both disorders if left untreated.

This condition primarily affects those who struggle from addiction, leaving many sufferers in the dark as I once was. While I was recovering from my own issue, I was eager to grasp an understanding of this complex condition — not only to educate myself, but to shed light on the situation to enlighten others who are seeking answers. I was inspired from that point forward.

Just A Dumb Poem

Good things come,

Then they’re gone.

Just like a song,

It doesn’t last long.

Or a full moon,

It’s over too soon.

Just remember

Nothing is forever

The Assailant

They say ‘keep your friends close and your enemies closer’, just as victims of violence are very much familiar with their assailants. Some of those victims are fortunate to later identify these individuals, others, not so much.

I am 21 years or older.
