Be Your Own Hero

We know the heroes

Who fly and blow fire,

And the patriots,

Whom we all admire.

Maybe the ones,

Very close to you,

A few of their words

And ambitions renew.

Heroes we see

And heroes we know,

Heroes can save us

When the hopes are low.

However,

Applauding others,

We don't introspect;

But those who do,

find a newfound respect

For themselves

On their own,

At times

When alone.

So remember,

Your very own hero

Can surely be you.

More than just ordinary.

She had two faces, but showed them both. Sweet as candy and tough as a rock. Helped those in need with the kindest words and an outreached hand. Never letting them down and always picking them up. Being tough and honest when they are in the wrong. Helping them to grow up kind and strong. Like her. So that one day they could help others too. One hero, made many. She couldn't fly or breath fire. But she had the warmest smile and the most steeled morals. And she helped discipline and inspire others to be extraordinary heroes in the most ordinary way.

Good, great, hero.

A good person is someone who helps others if they see something they could help with. Like volunteering at the local homeless shelter, or donating a little bit of money.

A great person is someone who goes out of their way to find someone in need of help, and then helps them. And if they see any random person who wants to be saved, or be fed, or hydrated; and any number of other things, then they will go out of their way to satisfy them.

But a hero? Well, a hero won't stop at just looking for someone who needs help. Donating all of their money besides what they need to live; moving to another country just to offer their skills or services; bringing hope to a child, without any trickery.

Everyone can be a good person. Some people are great. But a hero? Only a few people are that amazing.

Tigger

This year he turned ten years old,

his face now grey, much more difficult

to get up these days.

My steady companion since a tiny pup,

he helps me steady and gets me up.

Serving me is always on his mind.

Be it helping me walk steady or

giving hugs to others to be kind.

Seen me through some pretty tough times.

Lately though I’ve seen some signs.

His pace is slowing

his age is showing

and lately he’s been sleeping

much more all the while I feel I’m knowing

his days are numbered

as he chases after

imaginary rabbits in his slumber.

Yet this humble, gentle giant has been

my confidante and shadow hound

his entire life.

He is, and like all those who live to serve others,

will always be my

humble

HERO.

Tigger has been my service dog for ten years now.

Now it’s time to retire. I have a new puppy in training, a Harlequin GreatDane named “Snoopy” Tigger has his own comfy couch he relaxes on these days. :•D

Hovering juxtapose the aftermath, her frame denoted the epoch past. Her eyes strained against the light. Her voice became , like the trumpets

from Angels, as she equated the new minutes. She brought forth the new minutes of time into being what we had all been superimposing our fears into , and formulating our hopes around.

The next part of the tragedy was breathing among us.

Her blood stained hands reached down , out towards the Youth. She held special strength for the Youth. She knew of the manipulations that had cornered them in. The hearts of many whispered to her throughout the noise.

Nothing could be touched from what we knew before, but there was grace in it all.

There was a wind of some supernatural hope that blew around her, as she rose up from the carnage. I felt it on my face.

Some things inside of me grew enraged with the pity I held for myself, and I knew I would learn to fight for what had survived. Even if I could not decide where the absolute truth could be found,

I felt that I knew truth. I was scoured by a truth that claimed no definition. I was marked by the lasting truth, and I burned to represent it.

Others would one day see that we all contained the truth. If we stood as parts of the after, we each contained the truth.

She wrote it in the sky, at the end, for the beginning. She wrote it in the sky for the Youth, and for the damned, and for all of the time held fears.

Blazing in the haze of too many deaths from destruction , caught up on too many souls flight into the heavens ; She wrote it in the sky to set them free. We all could be free. That was the truth. I recognized it as I stood there free again in that moment of repose.

She wrote it in the sky ,

Somnium Aetas . . .

All , in time, was set free.

The ultimate hero, in a world of superheroes

Note from Chief Editor, Diana Jones

Hello Folks!

Welcome to the September 2060 edition of 'Life, Style & Stuff'.

You would be happy to note that your favorite (and to the best of our knowledge the only) print magazine in the country has managed to hang on for one more month at least, to put out this edition.

Without subscriptions from you folks we would have long been out of business, so first a big thank you from the entire team to our readers! (And to those of you who don't have a regular subscription, take the hint and get that subscription now!!)

Getting onto this month's edition we do have a bunch of interesting stuff for you, which I will get into.

But first a little teaser about our main article for this month.

Our writer, Frank Logan did an interview with the only eligible person in the entire country who rejected the partially government-funded program extending superpowers to those who couldn't afford them on their own.

So why do you think he was not interested in getting superpowers?

Religious reasons?

Skepticism about the technology or the corporation behind it?

I will let you make your own guesses.

To find out the actual reason for his decision turn to page 12.

'The ultimate hero', in a world of superheroes

By Frank Logan

If you met Matthew Wayne on the road chances are that you won't give him a second glance. Probably because you wouldn't consider him to be unusual.

He looks like any lean, tall guy in his mid-forties with tousled hair. He trains dogs for a living.

But he has a secret. He has an extraordinary superpower.

In fact, he has a greater superpower than any other person in the entire country.

So what is his superpower?

Nothing.

He has no superpower.

In fact he was the only eligible person in the entire country who rejected partially government-funded medical procedures which would have given him superpowers.

Now you're confused.

If he has no superpower, then why am I telling you that he has the most extraordinary superpower, especially considering that now there are millions of people with superpowers around the country?

It won't be a brief explanation. Bear with me.

Genesis International started commercially offering treatment giving superpowers to people more than five years ago. Initially the treatment was very expensive and only billionaires could afford it.

But things changed and it became more affordable, at least if you were reasonably rich. That meant that there were lots of people who could fly, whose skin could withstand bullets or fire, who could outrun cheetahs or whose brain capacity could perhaps rival supercomputers.

But there was a lot of opposition against the idea initially.

Technology sceptics, religious groups and even concerned citizens banded together and protested. One major reason for these protests was the fear that superpowers would lead to the ultimate form of inequality. That the rich would be far superior than the masses both physically and mentally.

The government, lobbied by Genesis, came up with a solution.

Mostly using money raised via a special tax on the rich, the government would partially fund the cost of undergoing procedures which would give any citizen at least modest superpowers. Any adult without a criminal record and healthy enough mentally and physically to undergo the procedure would be eligible.

All the resistance to Genesis crumbled away with people lining up to get superpowers. For some it was just for the experience or for fun, but for others it was a need. You won't get any promotions in office if you had the worst memory and mental capacity in office.

So everyone wanted superpowers.

Everyone except Matthew Wayne.

Before I met him I thought he would have rejected superpowers because he was opposed to the idea, because he was religious or because he had doubts about the technology or about the company doing it.

But it was none of those.

When I asked him the question his answer was, "Son, I don't hate people with superpowers or having superpowers. I just don't want or need them."

"How things are now is good enough for me."

I spent a lot of time thinking about what he said before I understood him.

For him, it was never about rejecting superpowers.

It was about choosing to be human.

And then, I understood.

In his own way, Matthew Wayne already had superpowers.

His identity, his capacity for self-acceptance, his silent confidence.

He was the only person in the entire country who was able to come to terms with his limitations, accept them - not with anger or resentment - and be able to live with them.

In a world of superheroes, Matthew Wayne is the ultimate hero, the only one with an identity of his own.

Parents

Everyone always thinks of superheroes, and firefighters when they are told to think about heroes. I, however, think about my parents. They halved saved me countless times, when I choke, almost get hit by a car, or when a pot bubbles over.

My parents are my biggest heroes in life.
