In French, “l’esprit de l’escalier” translates into “the spirit of the staircase” directly, but it means “the staircase wit.” The staircase wit is the feeling you get after leaving a conversation when you think of all the things you should have said. Write a poem about l’esprit de l’escalier!

Should I've said that?

Or no, I've should of said this?

God, I'm such a mess.

I can't even accept what I said is said,

and move on with it.

I really, really,  should've said that,

no no no no, I should've said that.

Damn I'm a mess.

Can't help it I guess.

It's how I roll,

making it up as I go.

But honestly, I really shouldn't have said that.
