In tribute to Leonard Cohen

I sang the syllables

but I didn't really

understand

I've never been in love

or broken by it

I haven't been in the world

long enough to

know a heart

The radio buzzes with static

cracks with electric heat

The laundry feels rough on the skin

of my hands

flaking and dry

A familiar song

sits in the grass by my side

sinks into my bone marrow

floats in my mouth

My lips open and

and Blue.

You were the

truest of my

secret friends

and my famous

raincoat was

your favourite

colour too.

When times

got tough

and I gunned

the twin webbers

and drove

nowhere much

it was you

who played

the songs

of my youth

that held me

between the

blurred lines

of truth

and sanity.

When you

asked Suzanne

and she let

the river answer

it whispered

its story and

I travelled too.

Like a last leaf that fall off the branches

Remains a memory to how hearty it has been
