The villanelle is a French verse form consisting of five three-line stanzas and a final quatrain, with the first and third lines of the first stanza repeating alternately in the following stanzas. These two refrain lines from the final couplet in the quatrain. Here's what that looks like (letters for rhyme scheme, numbers mean a line repeats): A1 B A2//A B A1//A B A2//A B A1//A B A1 A2 No theme, no prompt other than make it great. Not Present

Unexpected downtime, I thought that we might play

Instead you pace and want to flee

Why can you not just stay?

I thought this was a good place to be…

Nowhere to go on this rainy day

Here with me

Yet I can feel your love decay

And sense your longing to be free

Why can you not just stay?

But other places you long to see

And your nerves, they seem to fray

Here with me

“Out there” seems to always outweigh

Time only spent with me

Why can you not just stay?

I wonder how long you’ve felt this way

A rainy day-- the truth exposed, I only have this plea:

Why can you not just stay

Here with me?

Hold My Hand in Yours

Hold my hand in yours; we’ll make it through.

If life becomes too hard to comprehend,

for no one understands me like you do.

Along life’s lonely road, I’ll walk with you.

When times are hard, please know you have a friend.

Hold my hand in yours; we’ll make it through.

I’m here for you. You give me your strength too;

my courage is no longer just pretend,

for no one understands me like you do.

My friend, I’ll cheer you up when you are blue,

A smile, my heart to yours will always send.

Hold my hand in yours; we’ll make it through.

If I am down, you make me feel brand new

You know the way, my broken heart to mend,

for no one understands me like you do.

Though oft times life presents a horrid view,

Together we can face the bitter end.

Hold my hand in yours; we’ll make it through,

for no one understands me like you do.

Someday we might...

Look at the sun, do you see the same light?

Think of loving me, wish the day away,

Hoping and dreaming that someday we might.

I think of you through the darkness of night.

Though the weight of the world puts us astray,

Look at the sun, do you see the same light?

We hold onto our love, even despite

The plod of our lives, we crave for a way,

Hoping and dreaming that someday we might.

Now think of me, of the way I'll shine bright

When at last we meet, I'll know that today,

Look at the sun, you will see the same light.

Even without you, I will not lose sight

Of what we will be, but just for today,

Look at the sun, do you see the same light?

I'm hoping, dreaming, that someday we might.

For Calvin

I found my prince on our first date.

You made me feel that you would be

A husband always worth the wait.

You brought our dog's new mate,

A pup, into our home, I could see

I found my prince on our first date.

Our tiny place, a grand estate

Seen with eyes as you see me

A husband always worth the wait.

Clouds grew dark, and life a weight,

Then I'd for you and you'd for me.

I found my prince on our first date.

When sticky grief would not abate,

Safe in your arms I'd long to be,

A husband always worth the wait.

A pup put spring back in my gait,

At last, anew a family;

I found my prince on our first date.

I thank the stars for my bad fate

It brought me you and made us we

I found my prince on our first date,

A husband always worth the wait.

My First Born

Nine months of glory.

I couldn't wait to see your face.

Explains the journey of this story.

A love placed in any category.

You moving in me at slow pace.

Nine months of glory.

Morning sickness now gory,

a hunger without a trace.

Explains the journey of this story.

Calling you a unisex name Tori,

will sing out in this place.

Nine months of glory.

You will make history,

with a smile of purity and grace.

Explains the journey of this story.

Elevated feet with Maury.

A bladder kick is always the case.

Nine months of glory,

Explains the journey of this story.

THE ROSE CITY

The ruins run across the walls;

Carved into stone, their legend speaks

Through the hauntingly beautiful halls.

As Petra's ancient artwork calls,

Through the old houses that creak;

The ruins run across the walls.

It's history, one can't help but recall;

As intricate efforts and hard work leak

Through the hauntingly beautiful halls.

Smattering of bullets decorate it all,

One goes back in time, wonder at its peak;

But now, the ruins run across the walls.

The stories, like the sirens call,

spread their songs in a way that leave you weak;

Through the hauntingly beautiful halls.

Traditions echo through and stall,

Sometimes alluring, sometimes meek.

The ruins run across the walls,

Those hauntingly beautiful halls.

Throw The Black Rose Petals!

You can't have it all

A ring could be placed on our fingers

It would make us feel small

It's like talking to wall

So stubborn and still

You can't have it all

I can't be with you so I stall

You have to be with me to evade that chill

It would make us feel small

A stuffy wedding gown if I work up the gall

An uncomfortable suit if you have the will

You can't have it all

Tears stained on my bridal shawl

If we decided we're living and dying on this hill

It would make us feel small

The rings placed on our fingers won't make me bawl

Despite our union bringing no thrill

You can't have it all

It would make us feel small

To My Younger Self

Days drag on but years fly by,

So please be kind to yourself, old friend.

Don't let them destroy you in your search for why.

I know every morning starts with an exasperated sigh,

But I promise great things are just around the bend.

Days drag on but years fly by.

I know it's not popular to be introverted and shy,

But your heart and passion will always be on-trend.

Don't let them destroy you in your search for why.

I know right now it feels impossible to try,

But your talents will be recognized and your heart will mend.

Days drag on but years fly by.

Just know that we'll be okay and your eyes will dry.

You'll no longer feel like every day is the end.

Days drag on but years fly by.

Don't let them destroy you in your search for why.

But I Won’t

I lost her along the way.

Where she’s at I do not know.

I should look between the yesterdays.

You miss her too I heard you say.

Angry with me for not keeping her close.

I lost her along the way.

The ties that tied us were worn and frayed.

I’ve searched everywhere, high and low.

I should look between the yesterdays.

You love her too I heard you say.

Angry with me for not keeping her close.

I lost her along the way.

I was her, she was me, we were they.

She did not fit in the life I chose.

I lost her along the way.

I should look between the yesterdays.

Villanelle: Kisses Gone South

You'll know that all is amiss

When your pucker is compelled

It will all come down to this

You'll fall into the abyss

When disbelief is expelled

It is an upside-down kiss

You will see you are remiss

When scruples are soon quelled

It will all come down to this

You'll find you smoothly dismiss

The smile that has been withheld

It is an upside-down kiss

One day you will reminisce

Of prospects falsely felled

It will all come down to this

You will try to stop the crisis

But distrust of you has swelled

It will all come down to this

It is an upside-down kiss
