True Monsters

Easy - Shelly's Frankenstein, because in her book the real monster isn't the murderous creature cobbled together from bodies but the human who brought him to life.

Case in point: the poor creature never even gets a name. You have to invoke his creator - the title of the book itself - in order to identify him. It reminds us that humanity builds its own nightmares, it doesn't need to be preyed upon by boogiemen or the dark.
