Millennials, Listen Up!

Like chocolate and peanut butter the poet and the storyteller end their search in a song.

His words sweet and creamy:

”Freedom’s just another word for nothin’ left to lose

and nothin’ don’t mean nothin’ if it ain’t free

But feelin’ good was easy, Lord, when Bobby sang the blues

You know that feelin’ good was good enough for me,

Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee

Her voice warm, throaty and thick:

Well, I call him my lover, call him my man

I said, I call him my lover, did the best I can, c’mon

C’mon Bobby now, c’mon Bobby McGee, yea.

And like a peanut butter cup your mouth waters as you open the package, and lay the disc on the turntable. Is a treat less heavenly that delights the ear rather than the tongue? Or less fulfilling that satisfies the soul, rather than the body?

Kris Kristoferson and Janice Joplin, music that melds in your mind, not in your ear, bud.

Wonderland.

Welcome to wonderland, We've got it all.

Potions and pastries that make you grow tall.

Forests and cottages casltes and cards that can talk.

Welcome to wonderland, look where you're at.

Maddest of hatters, the chestshire cat.

Magical cabins and lovely white rabbits with clocks.

This looks like it came straight from Lewis Carroll himself.

Colorless

"The chocolates that I gave, and all the flowers/ Have changed today into nightmares and pain/I already lost my faith in you for the better/Yes, after the rain comes a rainbow but without colors."

It sounded better in Spanish, since the first time I heard it, it grabbed my heart and squeezed it. I guess it hit some part of me I was ignoring again. I wasn't heartbroken for any tangible reason and had probably just fallen down a manhole of depression again when the song first slipped into my Pandora feed. The second it came on, my mood fell and I felt everything. I didn't understand enough to know every word but knew whatever he was saying, I felt it and it hurt. Especially the colorless rainbow. I would say the words often, letting the words roll around in my mouth and dissecting them with my teeth. Rainbows were always happy before this, but now I just feel sad knowing the rainbow will fade, the colors are meaningless, and that love is fucking futile.

The Longest Road

“Giddy up and gold mine

Different place, different time

All the stars are in their prime

Pastel trailer park, stars so bright to hide the dark

All is quiet in the yard

Giddy up and gold dust, all the cars turn to rust

You’ve got no means for wanderlust”

-The Longest Road, by Morgan Page

There is poetry in these erratic, dreamy lyrics.

In this song, I am a child in a yard full of stars. That is where my story starts.

But it leads me to somewhere else; perhaps I flashed forward or perhaps I was here all along. I am in college and dreaming a bright future. In which I can pack my bags and get swallowed by the night. Perhaps this will upset the tides of the universe, but perhaps we are all just all trying to find our way back to the stars.

For in poetry, things can move fluidly, and nothing is permanent.

Love letters to God

‘Even if your allies draw lines in the sand’

As soon as I saw this chalenge there was no question which song I was going to choose. This song is one of the most breathtaking wonders of poetry I have ever come across. It is such a beautiful combination of passion, hope, love and resistance and is so emotional I cry every time I listen to it. Although there are so many songs out there that are flowing with poetry this one seems to be the purest emotion translated into song. This is probably one of the songs I would recommend to everyone, it is the most touching creation and draws so much empathy.

(I have linked it at the bottom of the page and all the lyrics are below.)

Give

Always give what you can

Even if your allies draw lines in the sand

And dig, always dig a little deeper

Sometimes it’s hard to be my brother’s keeper

Love

So you let love in

Baby I am home in the wake of your skin

And it’s crazy

How we wear our ceremony

Always be open to your path and your journey

Yes

She cradles my loneliness

A home in a forest nest

Universal test, feel the weight of my love put your hand on my chest

And rest

In the cradle of my arms

The battle that we face is a place where our scars come from

And to pick up that gun

My love we are destined to teach these ones to be brave

And never run away

Courage is birthed from the womb on the first light of day

Yeah, the day you were born you came out perfect never meant to be torn

In silence

Never been so loud in the violence

Never been so proud of a people

When we’re fighting for a change

Not afraid to lose it all despite all the rage

We are animals

And we cannot be caged

Provoke us to fight

So we burn a little sage and write poetry

Wiser than the enemy will ever be

The minority

And authority

Are you here to protect or arrest me?

I can’t tolerate the hate, and I’m losing sleep

Can’t breathe because they’re choking out a war in me

Immorality

- Nahko and the Medicine for the People

Secret Love Song

So this song came up to my mind and it's poetry to me cause this line, remind me of a couple who used to be together and kept their relationship secret so noone would know but the problems started to take place and they broke up in the end, even though they meant to be with each other!

We keep behind closed doors

Every time I see you, I die a little more

Stolen moments that we steal as the curtain falls

It'll never be enough

It's obvious you're meant for me

Every piece of you, it just fits perfectly

Every second, every thought, I'm in so deep

But I'll never show it on my face

Andy Grammer- Wish You Pain

"I hope your doubts come like monsters

And terrorize your dreams

I hope you feel the lonely hopelessness

'Cause no one else believes

I hope you question whether you

Ever really had a chance at all."

Besides the rhyme and meter, the concept of wishing someone pain because it's the only way to learn and grow is a poetic, philosophical message. I think the heart of poetry is messages like that embedded in deliberately structured language.

I also just really love this song.
