i forgot to fill the vase of flowers

and kiss you at sunset

i can’t tell if i still call for you

the way i used to

and i can’t tell if i want to

who will melt with you

I'm no longer willing to pretend things are perfect

I'm no longer willing to ignore all the signs

I'm no longer willing to accept that "us",

means leaving myself behind.

I'm no longer willing to hold my breath

I'm no longer willing to love you...

we’ve been drowning in

since you arrived

I try to speak

but my tongue is frozen

firmly in its place

my chest on fire

and my heart threatening

to jump out of my chest

and into your hands

come out of my mouth

You finally look me in the eyes

it’s the coldest it’s ever felt

between us

“I just don’t love you anymore”

You say

And then you go

As quickly as you came

And I wait for the second longest silence

That’s been in the room since you left

And whisper

“I do”

Did you ever really love me?

And if you did,

what changed your mind?

It hurts me while you keep trying

To caress me

To conquer me

To revive us

It hurts me

Because you still believe it will be better

I have to be cold

I must not give you false hope

Because I don't want it to be better

It hurts me to reject you

and it hurts me

Seeing you suffering

Someone with black button eyes

And lazy bushy eyebrows

That could love you more.

More than a word at the door.

More than a rare morning embrace -

Like,

Someone who would love you in their letters

And seal them with melted gold.

I know,

I’ve only ever given you a taste,

A fake, maybe a mistake.

We were only perfect on our wedding day.

And

After that, time came to pass.

I let those feelings dwindle.

I realize

That it’s unfair to you

Not to know that

I won’t ever do the same.

No,

I won’t ever write you letters

Or

Seal them with melted gold.

I won’t ever shout your name from rooftops

And let it echoe . . .
