Your child is coming of age. You realize you need to have "the talk". What wise words will you impart?

7 lessons I will teach my children:

1. Always get the milk out BEFORE you pour your cereal

2. When you feel the beat of your peoples drum in your chest, when your heart swells with the song of pride, you let your passion fill the souls of everyone around, let them know your strength, and make no apologies for knowing it too.

3. Love is patient. When your teeth grind together like stones, and your fists clench so tightly you’ve made an angry mold of your metacarpal bones, remember love is patient. Take a deep breath and taste the perfume of the person you love and give them time to remind you why you do.

4. What’s between your thighs has as little meaning as what’s between your eyes, the shell of a body you were born into does not define who you are or will be. Like a snail or hermit crab I encourage you to seek a home you can always carry and be comfortable in.

5. Men are gross, and women are too, people can suck, and so might you.

6. Everyone has felt pain, has felt joy, has felt inescapable sadness, has felt love beyond words. Everyone feels, everyone lives. It IS normal.

7. Febreze doesn’t work magic, just makes it smell like you shit fruit.

Time

(I've been waiting for a challenge like this, because this is my most favorite poem I've ever written. Not the best one, or most moving. But it makes me giggle)

Time was a beautiful woman

She will be as tall as her grandfather’s clock

With dark hair past her hips

and mahogany lips

She may give me quite the shock

Yesterday she will give me a kiss

Or is a while ago, in which she does?

Either way she’s messed with my mind

that beautiful Time

And here is why because!

My seconds are fused with my days

My years are eight inches long

What have I will done?

This is not no fun!

Everything’s right, I mean, wrong!

How could I be entranced by her eyes?

What, when, who, where, and why’s?

Maybe I shouldn’t not paid more attention

Her beauty will catch me, caught me

Affection!

Somebody helped me

Get me in of this mess!

Everything's opposite

My life, I’m living, approximate

Time, I can only not guess!

Challenge
Write a micro-poem conveying an important opinion or view in as few words as possible.
The criteria is only that a micro-poem is written showing as much meaning as possible from the writer on a specific topic (preferably) labeled at the end of the piece. The idea is to share strong, complex feelings in few sentences. (Not sure how many will see this, but for those who enter, thanks!)

After.

Death, deduced by a doctor as the conclusion of my life but dare I say I imagine something different.

Him.

I'd never looked at him for this long and allowed myself the pleasure of seeing him exist in everyday life, his curls falling over his brow-bone and his lips curving as he spoke. How beautiful my creation was. How exquisite. How deadly.

True Story

As an EMT, I've seen things. Things that would make the average person vomit or scream, or incredibly both. However, when I walked into that deaf, blind, man's room, a man with no sense of touch, tied to his bedpost, his hands gnawed on to the bone, his blood everywhere...

Alyssa Callaway

A delusional schizophrenic who finds a way to control her disease by playing into the hallucinations. After being abandoned by her East coast blue-blood family, she decides to literally create a new life for herself in the middle of Ohio. She works at a diner but in her mind, she's an exotic dancer. The checkered tiles make the perfect dance floor. She makes friends with Pierce and Colleen, teen family-farmers who, in their boredom, entertain Alyssa's "wild imagination".

Challenge
Write 3 poems. But, not just any poem! Write the poems as follows: Roses are red (Something that ends up rhyming with "red") Violets are blue (Something that ends up rhyming with "blue") They can be funny, serious, angry, sad, or violent! You do you. Good luck!

You Misconstrue

Roses are red,

You feast on the lies you've been fed.

Violets are blue,

You say they taste of sweet honeydew.

Roses are red,

He's wrapped you in spools of thread.

Violets are blue,

You give into his methods, tried and true.

Roses are red,

"It won't happen again," he said.

Violets are blue,

His actions, they will continue.

Challenge
Write automatically and describe who you really are, without referencing your physical appearance, job, traits, ethics, possessions, achievements, beliefs or environment. And good luck with that ;)

Don’t forget.

Tabasco on the tip of your tongue, or a stubborn ring around your tub, something you can't just wash away with water. Grease between your fingers, price tag stuck to a book cover, pieces of me always left behind. Imprinted your mind with memories of my skin against yours. How remarkable.

I’m sorry.

My heart is stretched

as you pulled me right and left

skin torn at the seams

too weak for this, I mean

I never felt this way

I never felt this pain

always the one who loses

What did you ever gain?

Covered in purple bruises

And I wonder how I’m sane?

I don’t know what I did

Why do I still apologize?

I‘m the one that’s in pain

So why do I see hurt in your eyes?

They told me you were no good

Why can’t I see through your disguise?

I’m the one who escaped

so why do I feel left behind?

Challenge
Write about insecurity or your own insecurities.

She hides

In the shadows cast,

by her defined eyebrows,

puckered lips,

angled nose,

she hides.

In the darkness,

in the crevasses of her collarbones

the hallows of her hips

the ruins between her ribs

she hides.

A living skeleton.

Bones wrapped in tissue paper,

that tears as she stretches.

Insecurity breeds ignorance,

so she hides.
