Green Bean

“Red,” Green thought, “Red has got to be the worst color of them all.” In fact, red was Green’s least favorite color of the rainbow. Red is the color of his dad’s terrible chili. It’s the color of the warnings his teacher would give him for talking too loud in class. Red is... well, it’s red and that was enough reason for Green to hate it. Yet there he was, confronted with a dilemma. It was the very first day of school and as Green arrived late to class, he looked around the room. It appeared each desk had a name tag taped to it. He quickly found his seat and noticed something shocking. The teacher placed him next to Bean, a white rabbit with red eyes. Green couldn’t believe it. “Didn’t she know?!” He began to think. “She must have known!” Green was so upset; his day was ruined. What could he do? As the week passed Green noticed that Bean enjoyed the same activities as he. A month passed and Green started playing with Bean on the playground and during recess. As Green went to school on the very last day, he thought to himself “Red... Red isn’t that bad” and he looked at Bean and said, “Your eyes. I love them.”

This is a short story aimed at young childern around 6 years old made by Jaden S. The title for this work is Grean Bean, and represents the bond the two main charecters, Green and Bean, share at the end of the story. I believe this project is a good fit because of the racial tension found throughout America. I belive to combat this growing unease we have to begin with our youth. Stories like this one, that show the bond two individuals share desipte their prejudice, are needed if we are to change as a nation. This story follows Green as he slowly comes to love that which he thought he hated. Green and Bean are two different charecters, but Green overcame his prejudice just as our American youth can.
