i shouldn't have leaned so far over the edge-

but i did, tumbling over the stones

and landing in water

that rose up to my knees.

the rope was long gone,

unravelled by the forces of time.

my shouts endlessly bounced

against the walls,

as i attempted

to finally escape.

hurrying along a shattered sidewalk

underneath murky windows of glass

pebbles clicked with pointed shoes

clatters against the concrete

a single ray of light surfaces

so easy to miss

yet it changed everything-

a smile.
